Chandler IMAP issues: https://bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?
id=12143
We've received a number of reports of problems downloading emails
from Chandler's IMAP folders. Many of them have been from Outlook /
Entourage or Outlook/Entourage + Exchange users.
I recently ran into this problem trying to configure IMAP folders on
my personal account. I set everything up and it all seemed to be
working, but then when I synced, I'd get a time out error. I found
that once I removed 1/2 of my mail from my Inbox, it all worked. This
is strange because I don't run into this problem with my OSAF Inbox,
which has 10x the # of messages.
So, either my mail service provider is booting Chandler because it's
taking too long. Or Chandler is giving up because the mail server is
too slow? I have a feeling it's the former because the time out is
happening too quickly.
Other IMAP problems that have surfaced include:
- Chandler times out when syncing mail (described above.)
- Chandler IMAP folders don't show up in Thunderbird. Fix (which is
documented in Get Started Guide): User needs to explicitly subscribe
to new IMAP folders from T-bird. http://lists.osafoundation.org/
pipermail/chandler-users/2008-July/002110.html
- Mail from IMAP folders get duped every time I upgrade and reload my
data: https://bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9502
- IMAP folders stop syncing if you move the Chandler Folders from
where they were originally created. So I wonder if when users
accidentally move folders around in their email clients and/or an
admin reconfigures the hierarchy on the server...Chandler can no
longer locate the 3 Chandler IMAP folders.
(Q. Does Chandler assume that the IMAP folders are in the INBOX
folder? Or does the IMAP server decide where they are created and
Chandler just makes a note of it? But if they get moved, the
connection is broken?)
- Finally, there is the mysterious, Microsoft - Email users often
report IMAP issues...I'm not sure if these reports are actually time
out issues in disguise and the frequent appearance of Microsoft
products in these reports is simply a reflection of market share ;)
If you've experienced any of the above problems, please pipe up now
and give us an update on whether you are still experiencing them.
Also, please let me know if I've left out any problems.
It appears that setting up IMAP folders is something new users try
right off the bat. The failure to get the Chandler IMAP folders
working appears to be a real blocker for many people hoping to try
out the app.
So I'd like to nominate that we take a look at this problem. It's
likely that there are actually 3-4 problems at work. I have a feeling
there may not actually be anything to "fix" so much as a need for
better error messaging and a better view into what's going wrong so
we can advise users on how to troubleshot.
