You could use some more RAM (it's cheap, I recently bought a 2 gig DIMM for 
a laptop for $35) but that really depends on what else is going on on your 
computer.

It has been shown before that a virus scanner can really affect your 
performance if it includes your __repository__ directory. As for the safety 
of doing this, well ... (biting my tongue).
