I'm not 100% sure, but my friend Mr Google [1] eventually told me that  
you need to set up outgoing verizon.net email as

Host: outgoing.verizon.net
Port: 25     TLS: enabled

Use Authentication: enabled
User name: stuart.jr at verizon.net
Password: <your password>

Hope this helps ... Possibly you had not checked "Use Authentication"?  
It's in general difficult for "Auto-configure" to determine whether or  
not this should be enabled or not.

If it doesn't, let us know more specifically what happens when you try  
to send outgoing email, and we should be able to figure things out.
