Oops, I wrote that with a different impression of what you were asking
for than my final impression.  So this part conflicts with my main
response.  Here's an explanation:

It would be easy to change the names of those folders, so you could
change Chandler Events to Events or something like that (I'd actually
like that).

However, it would nearly impossible to make them something other than
subfolders in Thunderbird.

I'll take this moment to plug the Nostalgy plugin for Thunderbird, it
allows you to hide folders and copy/move email to different folders with
keyboard commands.  You can set up shortcuts for common actions, and
when you have an uncommon task you can execute it by typing a substring
of the folder you're interested in.  I'm a big fan...
