I echo this.  My experience is that this is new behavior.  I've been 
background-syncing for many months.  But in the last however many weeks, 
I'll occasionally hear my machine crank up while I'm not doing anything. 
  I'll fire up the activity monitor and it's always python/chandler now; 
foregrounding Chandler I'll see a sync message in the status bar.

By itself, a CPU-intensive sync I wouldn't have squawked over, but since 
Andre mentioned it, I thought I should throw in that at least it appears 
to be new.

Maybe microsleeps somewhere in the appropriate loop would be 
appropriate, at least for background syncs.
