Chandler works fine now with fastmail. It was a fastmail problem indeed. 
Thanks much OSAF for your help in diagnosing a problem on the 
fastmail.fm side of the equation...above and beyond and much 
appreciated. Apparently Thunderbird happened to be one of the email 
clients not affected, adding to my consternation, but experts knew 
better.  :)
