[Dev] functional testing prep work

A couple of questions:
1. Can the environment variable setup just live in the helper script?
To me, that seems cleaner.
2. How would you specify to the script which test(s) should be run?
Presumably there'll be some kind of usage to say which tests can be
run, too.
